What is Virtual Reality(VR) and How it changed to life ?

Virtual reality (VR), which can be referred to as immersive multimedia or computer-simulated reality, replicates an environment that simulates a physical presence in places in the real world or an imagined world, allowing the user to interact with that world. Virtual realities artificially create sensory experience, which can include sight, touch, hearing, and smell.

Enter VR — virtual reality

Many people are familiar with the term ‘virtual reality’ but are unsure about the applications of this technology. Gaming is an obvious virtual reality application as are virtual worlds but there are a whole host of uses for virtual reality – some of which are more challenging or unusual than others, such as video, education, Healthcare, etc., There are many more uses of VR than first realized which range from academic research through to engineering, design, business, the arts and entertainment.

The Recent Developments of VR：

The first fifteen years of the 21st century has seen major, rapid advancement in the development of virtual reality. Recently, companies like Google have released interim virtual reality products such as the Google Cardboard, a DIY headset that uses a smartphone to drive it, economical in price; restricted in visual effect.

The restrictions in visual experience of Google Cardboard have led to the enhanced versions which finally answered the unfulfilled promises made by virtual reality in the 1990s will come to market at that time. In an effort to improve the immersive virtual reality experience, improvements has been made on the basis of cardboard with the addition of capture sensor, more complicated built-in control system, focus gear, screen.

As a matter of fact, smartphones alone do not produce the best VR experience, for it requires the support from powerful PC. Only with the addition of high-end CPU or game controller, Professional VR headset ( Deepoon E2 )can achieve the highest resolution and display quality simultaneously aided by optimized comfort and immersion to avoid motion sickness.

How to choose the most suitable VR headset for a starter？

1. Field of view

The field of view is an important factor when choosing your headset.  The human eye has a wide peripheral view, up to 180 degrees , without even moving and up to 270 degrees with eye movement.  This and the amount of detail, depth and clarity are all things that the virtual reality headsets have to take into consideration, in order to fool your brain into believing that what you are seeing is real.  Headsets with a ‘Field of View’ lower than 180 degrees are less likely to fool your brain and the gamer can suffer from a form of a tunnel vision phenomena.  However, a higher field of vision will not necessarily prevent this phenomena unless other conditions are also met, yet it does allow for a field of vision that is greater than a person’s normal peripheral vision, which will reduce the risks of it phenomenally.

What is a good number to look for?

Anything above 90 degrees is generally going to be pretty good

2. Adjustable lenses

IPD and Focus can be adjusted to adapt to your eyes

First, the distance between lenses — the interpupillary distance can often be increased or decreased. If you have wide-set eyes, you’ll want the lenses further apart. If you’re a kid, you’ll want them closer together.

The other adjustment is the distance between the lenses themselves and the surface of the smartphone.

On the LeNest above, for example, each lens moves independently when you turn it in its socket. This is particularly useful when you have eyes with a different prescription for each — like I do.

3. Fits over glasses

If you wear glasses, or have friends or family members who do and plan to share the headset with them, you’ll want a headset that’s wide enough to fit over them.

4. Weight,Straps & Heat Dissipation

In general, you want a headset that is as light as possible, but not so light that it breaks immediately. For example, a headset made of tissue paper would be extremely light, but not very usable.

Like cardboard, They are good for give-aways, and to give people a taste of what virtual reality feels like, but they’re not a headset that you want to spend much money on

Other models, such as VR box, baofeng, Gear box, all have taken full account of user experience by equipping themselves with adjustable headband to release your hands and satisfy various groups. Based on the current functions, they have also minimized the weight to the extreme to alleviate the pressure against your head. Accordingly, heat dissipation accounts for a great deal, since it helps to extend the life expectancy as well as anti-fog performance.

5. Fits over audio and power cables

Sound is important to a really immersive virtual reality experience, especially now that Google Cardboard officially support special sound effects.

Viewers that completely enclose the phone on all sides make it impossible to use headphones — or to plug in a power cable so that you can watch long movies without worrying about power running out.

6. Controller

Many enclosed headsets don’t have any buttons on them at all, you touch the smartphone screen with having to open up the headset.

Since designers are aware of this problem and typically create apps where in-world interaction is based on looking at some button or object for a few seconds.

Other headset manufacturers bundle remote controllers with their headsets.

To be on the safe side, pick a headset that either has a built-in button of some kind, allows direct access to the screen, or comes with a remote.

7. Price & Apps

Viewers made of cardboard run from $1 all the way up to $30

Plastic viewers run from $10 to over $100.

8. Pixels

This generally refers to the amount of motion blurring that exists. Therefore the fewer the better, I would suggest 3ms or less which translates to 4 pixels of motion blurring per pixels/second.

A high refresh rate. 

The refresh rate is the term for how quickly the images you are seeing are updated.  A higher refresh rate reduces the amount of lag you will experience and should increase the responsive experience you receive making for a more enjoyable gaming experience.  If possible you would like this to at least be in the region of 60 frames per second， such as Deepoon E2.

Low latency 

The time between turning your head and seeing the image change before you is called latency, if the images don’t quite keep up with your line of vision it can feel unpleasant.  Therefore the lower the latency the more realistic your online experience will be

9. Ease of use

It is believed that no one would like to take off the headset and shift into another APP. Most of the open-sided light-weight headsets make this easy — the phone just drops into the tabs.

Eric here. Today I will bring the detail review for the All-in-one Virtual Reality headset, Model HA544.

Virtual Reality is the hottest and newest topic in 2016, Lots of the big name companies like Oculus, HTC, Sony and Google have release their Virtual reality headsets. We have seen a lots of reviews for the many different cardboard style VR headset, but till now I can’t find any detail reviews for these all-in-one Virtual Reality HMD headsets, today I will take some time to study one of the low priced all-in-one device.

Here we go:

1 Why do we call those all-in-one VR headset?

Oculus, HTC VIVE, SONY you need to have a high end PC or Game Console to play, you connect to the device, and content will be streamed to the head set either by Wires or WI-FI

Cardboard, Gear VR is much easier,  It just requires a smartphone with gyroscope as content is supplied from the smartphone.

All-in-one VR HMD is between the above, with built in screen, and system, the content is coming from within. You don’t need smartphone or high-end PC to use it. just wear and play.

A lot of people are asking us what the real difference between the Google cardboard style and all-in-one VR devices.

Here are our thoughts:

1)     For cardboard style VR headset, the real VR experience depends on a lot of things, including:

Your phone’s screen size and screen resolution,  though most of the cardboard style VR headset give you their supported screen size in specification, but the supported range doesn’t mean the perfect size, because of different design , different lens, each cardboard style VR headset has their best supported phone size. You will need to take time to find the perfect fit.

Your phone display refreshes rate and gyroscope, some high-end smartphone might have better gyroscope and screen display refreshes rate , with the correct cardboard style VR headset, you might get better VR experience, but if you don’t have such a high end smartphone?

Samsung and Oculus have been working a long time to release the Gear VR, why?  Till now, the Gear VR just can support 5 Samsung flagship smartphones, why? We have tried GEAR VR with Samsung S7 Edge, after you insert the S7 Edge, the gear VR will block phone’s gyroscope and use the gear VR built-in one,  and with the help of 2K screen, it gives you one of the best VR experience you can image with a smartphone.

However, with the all-in-one device, you don’t need to worry about the above at all, they put everything into one device, they consider the screen size, lens, gyroscope and in theory, it will give you the best VR experience than just those cheap cardboard style headset. Most all-in-one device support micro SD card, you can save your huge 3D movies and play them via the micro SD card.

With the correct price, We think the all-in-one VR headset should have the market.

2 Hardware Review

HA544 is the cheapest ALL-IN-ONE device we can find in market, just $154.99, Package is like this:

The specification is clearly listed in the above photo,  It use the  Rockchip RK3188 as SOC, built in 5.5inch 1080p screen, and 2800mah battery, offer up to 5 hours running time. 9 axis gyroscope. support wifi/bluetooth. also have a 2mp camera.

Package is clean and sturdy for oversea shipping.

Now open the box, we get the following:

We have VR HMD, adjustable headstrap, earphone, micro usb cable, 2.4G air mouse remote controller with receiver, 5V/2A power adapter, user manual  and Cleaning cloth.

The micro usb cable is used for charging and data sync with PC.

The air mouse is used for control the device, just insert the usb receiver to HMD.

Now let’s check the detail about the VR HMD.

The total weight of this HA554 HMD is just 448g,  for your reference, The Samsung Gear VR and Galaxy S7 edge weight is 441g. So it’s almost the same.

Now let’s check the buttons and ports in this HMD.

This HA554 offer the physical direction button and back button for operations. Most of the cardboard style VR headsets don’t have those. and on the above photo, we can see , it also have three button in the left, the first one which marked “Nibiru” is used to for call setting menus, The second one is used for camera, the third one is power button. Long press the power on, and short press for sleep mode.

The central button is used for adjusting focal distance. so you can use this HA554 without your glasses. support 0 to 700 degree myopia.

On the other side, we have these ports:

Micro usb port for charging or data sync with PC.

Micro usb card slot for expanded, support max  32GB card;

Earphone Jack for connecting earphone;

Reset button is for manually firmware updating.

In the bottom, we just have the holes for heat radiation.

From this angle, we can see, the HA554 have the foam cushioning for better wearing experience.

It’s the front face, after power on, the blue light will show like this, and camera is on the bottom, camera is 2.0mp.

During my test, i have problems with how to adjust the pupil distance, and how to find the USB port. So i make this gif for your reference :

Now let’s check the Lens, HA554 comes with two aspherical 42mm diameter lens, and FOV is 90 degree and the lens can be easily removed from the headset.  here is the photo for the lens:

Above all is the review for the hardware,  We don’t feel any cheap in the quality, with the adjustment IPD ,  focus distance and head strap, also the big FOV and physical touch button, comfortable foam cushioning, The HA554 has the good hardware for the VR HMD. Now let’s check the software.

3 Software Review

Before play with HA554 VR HMD, i already played a lot of google cardboard style VR headsets  and the Samsung Gear VR.

For cardboard style headset, i need to download cardboard app from play store or app store, and run the app, put the smartphone in headset, and play.  If i want to play another, need to take off the phone, and run the other app again, and then put the smartphone back, it’s a little annoying when you have to do this each time.

Gear VR is much better, it built in the Oculus app, once you insert your samsung smartphone, the Oculus app will run directly, and it will bring you to a virtual scene, you can download all of the apps, games, or even watch videos from this virtual scene, it has back button, and touch pad, so you don’t need to take off your smartphone all the time, so much better VR experience compare with cardboard.

So what about the HA554 all in one VR HMD?  Here we go:

Press the power button for 3-5 seconds, the device will power on, and you will see blue light in front panel, and adjust the Pupil distance, and focal distance, wear the VR headset. you will see this:

First is system setting button, second is video player, third button is Nibiru VR app store, the fourth button is open camera, and the last one is viewing all of the installed apps.

In the second line, it will give the system status, including wifi, bluetooth, battery, and time.

and in the last, it said : Powered by Nibiru. So what’s this? It don’t seem like the usual android menu, It is said ” Powered by Nibiru” . What is Nibiru?

Nibiru is a chinese software company, before they focus on the android gaming platform, but when the VR is coming, they put a lot of time in developing this Nibiru OS (base on android), They have got a lot of investment from some famous chinese company, and growing very fast. As far as i know,  almost all of the all in one VR HMD in market  are all use their OS, like Omimo, Bossnel, including our review unit HA554.

HA554 uses the new Nibiru VR OS which is also based on android,  here is the software information:

Now let’s check the regular setting menu:

It just offer  Wlan (wifi) setting, bluetooth setting, Normal setting, system information, and gamepad setting.  Let’s check one by one.

Wlan Setting:

Open Wlan setting, the system will scan wifi ssid, and pick one to connect,  if you have password, the keyboard will pop up like this:

You can use the direction button to enter the password, and connect.

Bluetooth

It will just like your smartphone bluetooth setting, you can turn on / off, or scan the nearby device.

Normal setting includes this:

Light means screen brightness setting;

Sound setting, i find there is no speaker in my review unit, i have to insert the earphone, and have sound.

Language, Now the Nibiru OS just offer Chinese and English , no other language.

Theme, System offer two different theme.

Sleep time, you can set the screen sleep time. it offer 1 mins, 2 mins, 5mins, 10 mins, 30mins and never sleep choice;

Time zone, you can set your correct time zone base on your country.

In System setting, it offer the following :

System update, offer two method to update system, OTA and update via SD card, also i find i can connect the HA554 with PC via micro usb cable, so flash firmware via PC should also work, just like what we did on rk3188 tv box

System Reset , i don’t need much more explanation:)

About device, we have seen the screenshot earlier:)

In the end, let’s check the gamepad setting, click gamepad, it give us this option:

Seems the Nibiru OS already compatible with some 3rd party accessories, i only have the bluetooth gamepad and tested to connection, without problem.

So in the near future, we should saw some interesting accessories, like bracelet, game gun, or smart watch as input device and accessories, that will improve our virtual reality experience a lot i think.

pc-host should be an interesting thing, can i play pc games via this setting? I haven’t got a time to check this function, will update this later when i have time.

Now let’s back to the main menu, check the app store:

You can download games, apps from this store, now it already have 31 games for downloading, and all of them are FREE right now. I have been told, Nibiru will add much more VR games in their store this year. and they will open sdk, and hope more and more developers join them.

So this is the basic software / system review. If the above simple hardware and software review can help you know this product better, it will be ok for me, but now, i will talk something useful information in my testing.

1 Can i install other app like google cardboard which is not in their app store?

Yes, you can! Just download the app you need to your pc, and copy the app to micro sd card, install the app via micro sd card. or you can directly download the app through built-in browser. But google play store is not supported right now, I can’t install google play store since the system is not rooted. (will try that later)

2 It just can run cardboard style VR apps?

As we all know,  when we use cardboard style vr headset, we have to use special VR app,  means the app must already be left/right split mode first. but when i use this HA554 HMD, i find i can directly install anything, just what i did in tablet. for example, i download the antutu benchmark app and run it in this HMD:

The system directly split the screen to left/right mode and i can directly use it in this VR HMD. Still confused? another sample:

This is the cardboard demo app you usually use in cardboard style vr headset:

The content must be left/right split mode, and when you watch this from VR headset, it will give you the virtual reality experience. but when you directly run this app in HA554 HMD, here is what you get:

OH, NO, the screen is split to 4 part. and when we watch in the HA554, it is unwatchable. So does it means HA554 can’t run VR apps? Wrong.

Press the “Nibiru” button in device or remote control, there will be a menu like this:

choose the 3rd button, open VR mode. and now you will see this on screen:

It is like what you see from any other cardboard style vr headset, and you can use cardboard app without problem.

When we open VR mode, and check the same antutu app, we saw this:

This time, screen won’t be split to left/right mode, but since the app don’t support VR, so it become unwatchable in HA554.

In short. HA554 can be compatible with all apps, VR or non VR, when you run VR apps, you open VR mode.  when you run regular apps, just close VR mode.

3 How to operate ?

Google use magnet in v1 cardboard, and  conductive foam button in cardboard v2, Samsung Gear VR use the touch pad to operate.

without those , you have take off your smartphone each time or use extra bluetooth controller. That will effect your VR experience.

HA554 offer 3 different operation method:

A) Physical button in device, you can use the direction button to move, ok for confirm, and also have back button and other useful buttons in device.

B) Air mouse, The HA554 includes the following simple 2.4G air mouse, just connect the receiver, and the little remote controller will work like charm.

C) Head mouse, it will use the built in gyro, when you press Nibiru button,  the system will give you this menu:

and the first one is opening Head mouse, after open that, you will saw Round cursor on screen, move your head, and the cursor will also move.

Conclusion

HA554 is first all in one VR HMD i have ever played, I spent some time to learn how to use it. but after familiar with the operation, i find it is really better than those cardboard style vr headset.  I mainly use it for playing videos, standard, 3d, 360degree videos are all working well,  the 1080p resolution screen can meet the standard VR experience. I don’t feel obvious dizzy , and also heat seems no problem. As an entry-level all-in-one VR HMD, consider the low price, it worth a try.

But if you serious gamers, i suggest wait for high resolution and powerful cpu/gpu all-in-one device.

China SOC maker Rockchip just release their new SOC RK3399 today in Hong Kong Electronic Fair.

Rockchip RK3399 cpu is base on Dual ARM Cortex-A72+Quad ARM Cortex-A53 and GPU is ARM Mali-T860MP4, Compare with the old Mali-T628, the total performance improve about 45%.

Rock chip show different definition about this chip, but highlight the support for VR (virtual reality) all-in-one device. He is what they talked:

1 Rockchip RK3399 can decode  4K 360 degree Panoramic video directly, and compatible with traditional 2D/3D content.

2 Lower than 20ms latency , special optimize for VR headset.  20ms or lower latency has been approved by Gear VR or Oculus, HTC , over than that, people will feel dizzy and uncomfortable.  Some users always complaint about the dizzy when they use the cardboard style VR headset, the reason is the smartphone SOC and VR headset have not been optimized for VR.

3 Screen refresh rate can reach 75Hz or higher, Now all of the flagship smartphone just can reach 60Hz screen refresh rate, some others might lower than that.  Rock chip RK3399 can offer at least 75Hz screen refresh rate. The high refresh rate will give better VR experience, especially for VR games. For reference, The oculus rift and HTC Vive has 90Hz refresh rate, and Sony PS VR use 120Hz refresh rate.

4 Rockchip RK3399 can support 2K FHD screen.  The high resolution screen means less blurring, in our opinion, 1080p is the minimum requirements for VR headset, 2K is much better.

5 Rockchip RK3399 already built in Anti distortion, pupillary distance algorithm, Before if you want to make a good VR headset, you should have optics specialist , technology specialist, but now, with RK3399,  the factory which focus on hardware now can make their product easily, so we might saw more and more all in one VR Headset very soon with RK3399.

6 Rockchip RK3399 support left/right split screen function in hardware and software. As we all know, for all in one VR headset, split screen is an important technology,  Rockchip RK3399 can suit for different screen automatically  to make sure the best VR experience.

7 Rockchip RK3399 support difference game engine, including Unity. As we all know, GPU is much more important than CPU in VR headset, Rockchip RK3399 base in the powerful Mali-T860, You can read the information about Mali-T860 in ARM official site here. Pico Neo has a much larger lenses than any other virtual reality headset i have tried, and also have proximity sensor  like the Gear VR. The foam cushioning also make it comfortable when wearing.

In the back of the HMD, you can see the micro usb port for charging and earphone port.

The most interesting part is the Pico Neo HMD comes with a fixed USB type C cable, Pico are saying you can use the HMD separately with your PC, but they don’t tell useverything. Seems your pc must also have type C port to accept the video/audio signals, There is no HDMI port I can find in this developer kit, not sure if this will change when the customer version is release.

I have also tested this with the new LG G5, as the G5 also have type C port, and LG also release a VR headset support type C, unfortunately it doesn’t work. LG G5 maysupport their own VR headset.

Now let’s check the cool remote with qualcomm snapdragon 820 inside.

It has two usb c female port in both side, one is for charging/data sync, the other is for connecting with HMD.

Both of these models have 96 degree FOV, with built in 9-axis gyro, and equipped with touchpad similar to Samsung Gear VR.

The MoJing 5 will support phones from 4.7inch to 5.5inches and will required your android device too support OTG(on the go) function.

The MoJing 5 supports range sensor, a power saving feature that activates phone when wearing and can place phone in a “sleep” state when you leave, this feature is also found in the Samsung Gear VR, as Samsung support their own product only and we are curious how MoJing 5 will support different models.

Besides new hardware, BaoFeng have updated their APP and a new release of their VR UI is called Magic UI.

The above information is basic for MoJing 5, frankly speaking, it appears BaoFeng has just copied from Samsung Gear VR, and we are curious to how they are supporting different model phones.

Now let’s check the MoJing 5 Plus. The biggest difference between MoJing 5 and MoJing 5 plus is the MoJing 5 plus built is the Leap Motion controller, and supports Gesture Recognition.

Getting Started

To use Baofeng Moyan camera, please follow these simple steps:

1. Charge your Moyan camera

When Moyan camera is in the state of power off, insert original adapter into 220V/50HZ outlet, and then connect Moyan camera to the original adapter through Micro USB data cable.

When charge is in process, the status light will be red. When the charge is completed, the status light will switch to blue.

*When Moyan camera is in the state of power on, insert adapter into the camera to have a continuous supply of power.

2. Download Baofeng Moyan APP

Android user: search “Baofeng Moyan” in Android app market.

IOS user: search “Baofeng Moyan” in APP store

3. Install the foldable stand

Put screw into Moyan camera’s screw base and tighten it.

Power on

When Moyan is in turned-off period, long pressing power button around 3 seconds, the camera status light turns on (red) and that means the camera is in the started state. At this point, you can release the power button. After waiting for a while, the camera status light will change into blue and that means the camera is successfully turning on.

Low battery: long pressing power button, the camera status light (red) blinks twice and then stop. This means the battery is low. Please charge the battery.

Power off

When Moyan is in the state of power on, long pressing power button around 3 seconds. As soon as the camera status light blinks, you can release the power button. The camera status light will blinks a few seconds and then stop. That means the camera has been successfully turned off.

Shooting

Taking pictures

Press the shutter button once, when hearing the continuous beeping sound, you have 3 seconds to adjust the camera position. After 3 seconds, you will hear a shutter sound, and that means a photo has been taken.

Video recording

Long pressing the shutter button around 2 seconds, then you will hear two beeps and that means the camera has begun recording. In the process of recording, the status light keeps blinking slowly. That means the camera is recording video. When you want to end the shooting, press the shutter button once again. You will hear a beep sound and that means the video recording is end.

Pairing

Through Baofeng Moyan APP, you can see real-time image of what is going on. You can also control the camera to shoot pictures and videos. Also, you can enjoy the pictures and videos you’ve taken and share it to social network via APP.

Connection step

1.

Make sure your Moyan camera is turned on: the blue status light is on permanently.

Turn on your phone’s WLAN switch and connect the camera to Moyan Wifi (SSID and password can be found on a label on the bottom of the camera).

Open Baofeng Moyan APP and click on the lower right corner of the Moyan icon. When prompted, connect your Moyan camera to Baofeng Moyan

Connect Moyan camera to Internet

After Moyan camera has connected to Baofeng Moyan APP, you can control Moyan camera to connect to the Internet via APP and then view the real-time videos taken by Moyan camera.

Restore the factory settings

When your Moyan camera breaks down, please try to restore your camera to the original factory settings.

Please ensure your Moyan camera is not in low battery status. We suggest you charge you Moyan camera a while and then restore your camera to factory settings.

When Moyan is in the state of power on, stab the reset hole with a needle or other sharp objects and press it around 3 minutes. As soon as the status light starts blink, you can release reset button. Until the status light turn off press power button, Moyan camera will reset automatically.

Restore the factory settings will only erase your Moyan camera settings. Your pictures and videos saved on your camera will not be erased.

The product comes in a big white box with Xiaomi Mi logo on it. In the box, you can find 1*VR Headset, 1*Remote, 2*AAA Batteries, 1*Warranty card and 1*Manual.

Design

It adopts integrated design and looks compact and smooth. The headset surfaces that come in contact with skin are made of soft velvet material, which is comfortable while wearing. The gadget measures 295×200×156 mm. It weighs only 408 grams alone. Putting it on does not bring discomfort as it is nicely balanced and disperses weight load accurately.

The Mi VR headset can support the head circumference of 525mm to 630mm, which can be adjusted to fit any head shape with a help of a strap. It does not loosen for glasses to slide around on the head, allowing to dive into the VR virtual world even deeper.

It does have built-in independent motion sensor which enhances ultra-low latency for superior performance. This would provide dizzy less user experience.
Mi VR Glasses are supplied with a somatosensory motion controller that lets user not just be an observer in VR virtual world, but also challenge it and develop hand movements control. With a help of a controller, the user can navigate a menu, simulate shooting, set direction in the game etc. Touch control is also supported.
